How to Compare Visa Run Options, and What to Ask Before Booking

Going alone, hiring a car or booking an organised trip: how the visa run options from Ho Chi Minh City compare, and ten questions to ask any operator.

There is more than one way to do a visa run from Ho Chi Minh City. The right one depends on your confidence with the rules, your budget, your time and who you're travelling with. Here is how the main options compare, followed by the questions worth asking before you book anything.

The main options

Going on your own by public transport

Suits: experienced travellers on a tight budget who are confident about their visa situation.

Trade-offs: usually the lowest cost. You handle every connection, the timings and the border procedure yourself, with no one to call if something doesn't go to plan.

Hiring a private car and driver

Suits: groups and families who want their own schedule.

Trade-offs: comfortable and flexible. A driver provides transport, but usually not visa guidance or a document check. You still need to know the rules yourself.

An organised visa run trip

Suits: people who want the trip planned and explained, and someone to check their paperwork before departure.

Trade-offs: costs more than going alone. Check exactly which services are included, because "visa run" can mean anything from a seat in a van to full planning and support.

Flying out and back

Suits: people who would rather combine the trip with a short holiday, or whose nationality makes land borders difficult.

Trade-offs: fares vary widely, and you need to meet the entry rules of the country you fly to. Check that your Vietnam e-visa or exemption covers the airport you return through.

What matters more than price

  • Fit with your passport. The best route for one nationality can be impossible for another.
  • Your margin for error. If your permitted stay ends in two days, you need an option that can't afford mistakes.
  • What happens if something goes wrong. A refused entry or a missed connection costs time and money. Know who helps you and what it costs.

Ten questions to ask before booking a visa run

  1. Which border gates does the route use, on both sides?
  2. Does the Vietnamese gate on the return accept the e-visa?
  3. Is the price per person or per vehicle, and what exactly is included?
  4. Which government fees are included, and which do I pay myself?
  5. Where and when is pickup, and roughly when will I be back?
  6. Will someone check my documents before we leave?
  7. Who can I contact during the trip, and how?
  8. What happens, and what do I pay, if a border authority refuses entry?
  9. What is the cancellation and refund policy?
  10. Can I see the plan and the price in writing before I pay?

A good operator will answer all ten without hesitation. Be cautious if anyone offers a "guaranteed" visa or re-entry. That promise isn't theirs to make.
